Two great reviews of Banana Puddin in Amsterdam News!

When Israeli Jazz Pianist Liz Magnes moved to NY, it was an opportunity to further her interest in exploring and presenting jazz in her own unique style which combines Mideastern nuances with western musical ideas. With so much world attention focused on the Mideast, it is timely. Her playing reflects the most profound use of "Taqsim"; the Arabic meaning of improvisation , an immersion of personal and universal emotions. Whether it is a solo program of standards, a duet with a poet, or her own compositions, the gifted Magnes brings a unique performance to her audience. This October and November she will be performing in several venues in our area .

"Over the years I have extensively explored a variety of ethnic melodies and rhythms, integrating rich and varied musical heritages. Medieval Jewish Prayers; Ladino melodies; Arab Maqam; Israeli pop; and American standards....weaving these different eras and cultures into musical tapestries."– Liz Magnes

PRAISE FOR LIZ MAGNES

“What wonderful music, and an amazing array of ideas come through with your beautiful playing"
-Tania Leon

“If ever there was a time when we need music to bridge age-old differences, 'tis now. Enter Liz Magnes. the thoughtful ,deep music from Ms. Magnes is a much needed antidote for cauldrons of hate. She plays with great fire, passion, imagination boundary -crushing motifs and an honest sense of wonder.”
–Bob Margolis-Ulster Publishing’s almanac

“I built a fire, lit candles, laid out plates and silver……I put out some CDs, Mabel Mercer singing Cole Porter,.. and an Israeli pianist , Liz Magnes playing “Someone to Watch Over Me”. John had been seated to Liz Magnes once at a dinner….and she had sent him the CD, a Gershwin concert she had given…In its ability to suggest drinks at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem during the British period this CD had seemed to John spectrally interesting, recovering evidence of a vanished world."
–Joan Didion “The Year of Magical Thinking”

"Liz Magnes has a very individual and unorthodox approach to the piano.... She wanders through many different styles and is a surprisingly eclectic performer."
–Nesuhi Ertegun

"No ordinary solo performer, Liz has developed a unique style oforchestration in which she is her own best accompanist. Through theuse of bells, beads, and a miniature bow.... Liz uses the total piano creating a totally new and different solo piano concert."
–Haaretz Daily Newspaper

Magnes uses rumbling but unostentatious bass lines to create a rolling undercurrent that gives a sinuous flow to her performance of well chosen pop standards by Berlin, Carmichael, Lane and Gershwin.
It is a style that is quietly but so insistently rhythmic that when she applies it to as familiar a bossa nova as "The Girl From Ipanema", the piece acquires an unexpected head-long energy....Miss Magnes takes a jazz approach to such music of the Middle East as an Israeli Hora and a 14th Century Moroccan prayer. A Turkish prayer provides the basis for such an exuberantly driving display of boogie- woogie that one is apt to wonder if this is where the eight-to-the- bar piano style came from."
–The New York Times

Ms. Magnes hopes to touch the hearts of the public through her special brand of jazz which speaks of her life in two very different parts of the world, her love of creating music and performing, and, always, her hopes for peace
